If there is no way to designate this, then your calculator is merely rounding off or truncating your answers. How is your calculator supposed to know that an entry of let's say 900 has 1, 2, or 3 significant figures? If there is some way to designate this when you enter the data, then, yes, a calculator, given the right software, can produce the right output. There are separate rules for multiplication/division and for addition/subtraction when using significant figures (). Rounding off or displaying a predetermined number of figures as the settings of this calculator allow, is NOT the same thing as "doing" significant figures.
